CASE STUDIES
Secure Innovation - Wildlife Habitat Creation project
In 2023 Green Earth were commissioned to create a dedicated wildlife haven on the grounds of Secure Innovation Ltd in Saltash, Cornwall.
The site was surveyed and the habitats and botanical species were recorded. A plan was then devised to maximise the ecological diversity on-site and to create a wildlife haven that can be enjoyed by the staff and visitors.
Formerly a barren, close-cut grass area, with scrubby margins and a narrow copse of native trees, the site had 3 main habitat types, but no real purpose. A new vision for the site, with a large waterbody, ephemeral wetland, larger expanses of native trees, native hedgerow, and flower-rich meadows was developed.
Local stone was used to create hot-spots for reptiles and invertebrates, decorative walls, and dry-stone raised beds. Locally-sourced native logs were brought in with help from The National Trust to increase and diversify the deadwood stock on-site, and were used to create ecological statements throughout the habitat areas.
The existing grassland was deemed to be suitable for gentle enhancement through careful management, rather than expensive and disruptive removal and replacement.
To further enhance the site for species like reptiles, amphibians, and bumblebees, curving mixed-material mounds were created throughout the site creating extra shelter, hot spots, and dry-refuges for over-winter animals. All following the advice and guidance of years of academic and professional conservation biology and ecology.
Now the site is full of life! It has seating areas for staff, surrounded by rare wildflowers like the Pink helleborine Orchard. Unique log benches overlooking a large teeming pond, and every year new flowers establish and spread.
Green Earth Gardens and Ecology's specialist team now monitor and manage the habitats, balancing the needs of the site, staff, and wildlife. We gave several talks about the project, communicating the changes to the site and the ecological benefits they provide.
Thanks so much to Jason, Andy, and all of the staff at Secure Innovation for this fantastic project!
